Dutch legends coach sides to 3-3 draw

Friday night excuses

Heerenveen and Ajax drew 3-3 on Friday night - a fantastic game with two Dutch legends masterminding their teams. Marco van Basten and Frank de Boer were great players and look like being very successful managers.

It gives me a excuse to post possibly the best goal of all-time to the site (it's all opinions, but it's in my top 5). It also gives me the chance to let you know about players like Alfred Finnbogason, Luciano Slagveer and Magnus Wolff Eikrem - not only do they seem like good players, but they have fantastic names!

But anyway, here's that volley I dream about...

Geezer of the Day

This guy would have to be in the conversation about best French striker of all time. 30 goals in 54 games for the national team. 134 in 215 games for Marseille and countless (well, not countless, just too many to list) goals for AC Milan, Bayern Munich and Bordeaux.

Loved a volley, was great in the air and was a fantastic finisher. Also gives me a reason to hum the French national anthem, which has to be one of the best there is. Today's Geezer is Jean-Pierre Papin.

Great timing for England v Scotland

If Andy Murray wins he's British, if he loses, he's Scottish. There is no doubt who the Wimbledon champion will be supporting tonight. It's England v Scotland at Wembley - the 111th meeting of the teams, but the first for 14 years.

It's a great time for the game, just 3 days before the Premier League season starts - the Scottish league started with Celtic being awarded the title by default.

It's the oldest international football match, and was played every year from 1872-1989 (as long as you don't mention the wars!).

Scotland aren't much of a team at the moment, and England are rarely much of a team come tournament time. However, the hosts are pretty good in friendlies, and will hope to benefit from some quality goalkeeping as seen in the Under-21s game last night.

The beautiful game is slowly coming back to our pitches, screens and bars this weekend.

Geezer of the Day

You can't be that bad a player when you're named AC Milan's Player of the Century, have your number 6 shirt retired, win the Champions League 3 times, Serie A 6 times and the World Cup.

Baresi always seemed to be old, so finding a picture of him as a younger man was tough - but when the Milanese nickname you 'Piscinin' (Little One) and you stand 5ft 9" as a defender, then you have to be up to the challenge.

Tio Pelotas seems to spend his time trawling the internet for things like this, but who am I to tell a man with the nickname 'Uncle Balls' what to do.

We've all been in this situation - I can remember starting games with less than 11 - and it's a good lesson in why you always check for the paper first, or use the boxers!

What would happen if an American football coach was hired to coach a Premier League soccer team? It’s a good bet their learning curve would be pretty steep (and they may misinterpret the word ‘wanker’ as a term of respect and endearment.)

The sketch -- made to promote the Premier League on NBC Sports -- stars Jason Sudekis as American football coach Ted Lasso hired to manage Tottenham, or TOT’ NUM. There he learns that besides the name, American football and the kind played everywhere else have very little in common. Tackling, scoring, offsides, you can pass forwards AND backwards, that the ball goes under the crossbar, not over it.

But whether they’re called Manchester United  or the Dallas Cowboys, both games always have a super rich team people either love or hate.

Now, will somebody *please* explain offsides to us Americans??
